We Answer: Can Men Use Women’s Skincare Products?

A common question we get asked at Dr Skincare is can men use the “women’s” skincare products we promote on our page. Searches for men’s skincare information on Google continue to rise each year, with some of the top queries including “men’s skincare sets” and “men’s skincare routine” At Dr Skincare, we are a gender neutral skincare brand and all our skincare information is segmented based on skin-type and concerns rather than gender.

What do you think of the below quote?

“Women’s deodorant scents: rose, cotton, spring, meadow. Men’s: WINTER ICE, SHARKNADO, GLACIER PUNCH, ANTIFREEZE, GUN.”

This description of deodorants went viral on Twitter in 2014, with it being shared over 24,000 times. This led to a lot of discussion about how skincare and grooming products are typically marketed to men and women and not in a non-gendered way.

Men’s skin may be 25% thicker than females’ skin and having high testosterone levels can give thick skin and more collagen content. However, that does not mean that they can not use the same skincare products as women, and vice versa. It goes without saying that skincare should only be determined by the type of skincare an individual has NOT what gender they are.

Yes, we know that men may not be that fussed about spending a bit of their day doing a full skincare routine but even the basics of a good cleanser and moisturiser will do the trick to keep your skin clean and hydrated. In a study carried out by Mintel (2020), 20% of males used in the research project said they bought skincare products. Whilst this is not a huge number it shows that males still buy skincare products. This is why skincare brands should not be gender specific because there is a market out there for males wanting to buy skincare products.

We know that we have done various blogs with skincare tips, however, we want to give you guys tips that should be followed by BOTH males and females to keep their skin healthy and hydrated.

Determine your skin type

The most important thing to do before buying skincare products is figuring out what your skin type is. The four most common ones are; normal, dry, oily, and combination. The ingredients in skincare products react to different skin types so it is vital you buy the right products to help your skin. For example, if you have dry skin, a face wash loaded with moisturising ingredients would help to prevent dryness.

Wash your face regularly

Dermatologists say that washing your face twice a day is a good way to keep away any dirt and makeup residue that could be on your skin. It also stops the accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, which could result in blemishes and dull skin if not washed off. This applies to males and females because no one can prevent dirt getting onto your skin!

Use a good moisturiser

Moisturising after cleansing, and especially after shaving, is one of the best ways to maintain youthful, healthy and glowy skin. Moisturising ingredients like hyaluronic acid lock in moisture and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (we are not sure why anyone wouldn’t take 2 seconds of their day to do this to prevent wrinkles!!)

Wear SPF every day

We know we go on about this but EVERYONE should put SPF on their skin every single day!
