The World of TikTok: Skincare Trends

In the fast evolving beauty- and skincare world, the popular app TikTok has become a powerhouse. The app contributes to new trends and influences changes in the skincare world across the globe. The users of TikTok share their skincare tips, ideas, recommendations and experiences to the platform. It has become a popular place to learn and teach for beginners, enthusiasts and professionals. Trends such as DIY face masks, slugging and pimple patches all promise flawless, glowing skin. But do they actually work? It can be challenging to part the trends that works and the ones that don’t. So, this article will delve into some of the most popular TikTok skincare trends, and provide insight on if they are worth the hype or not.

Trend #1: Double cleansing

Double cleansing involve using two different types of cleansers to cleans your skin. This trend started out in Korea, before it spread to the rest of the world. How it works, is you start off with an oil-based cleanser. This will help remove makeup, sunscreen and oils from your skin. Then you go in with a water-based cleanser. This helps remove any remaining impurities such as sweat, dirt, and the residues from the oil-based cleanser, preventing clogged pores and breakouts.

Double cleansing is suitable for most skin types. If you wear heavy makeup or have oily or acne-prone skin, you may benefit from double cleansing. Oil-based cleansers include cleansing oils, balms and micellar water. Water-based cleansers include gel cleansers, foam cleansers and cream cleansers.

Trend #2: Icing your skin

Skin icing involves applying ice to your skin to help reduce redness and puffiness in the face. Some use ice cubes or ice-cold tools, other use items specifically made for skin icing. This is an old trend that has recently had its debut due to TikTok.

There are multiple ways to do this, and the best part is that it can be completely free. You can rub ice cubes over the skin, dipping your face into ice cold water, or apply cold teaspoons kept in the freezer on areas such as your eyes. There are also more sophisticated ways to do skin icing, with the use of more advanced tools such as facial globes.

Ice is normally used to reduce pain and swelling after an injury. It works by constricting the blood vessels and decreasing circulation to the area. It has the same effect on your skin, reducing puffiness, dialling down redness and lessening the appearance of pores. So if you struggle from swollen eyes, or a red complexion, ice might be your answer. However, it is important to note that the results are temporary. After a while the redness and skin laxity will return.

Trend #3: The moisturiser sandwich

The moisturiser sandwich involves trapping in the hydration by layering the moisturiser onto damp skin. You start off with damp skin, either from a splash of water or from a facial mist. You then apply hyaluronic acid serum, before you top it off with a moisturiser. The moisturiser sandwich is ideally supposed to help seal the moisture in the skin. The results you reach for are a smooth, plump and hydrated complexion. The moisture sandwich will not only help hydrate the skin, but the fact that it involves applying lighter products first before the heavier ones gives them the opportunity to penetrate the skin.

Trend #4: Retinol

Retinol is also a new trend within the skincare world thanks to TikTok. Retinol started trending because if its anti-aging effect, in addition to its ability to clear up the skin and get rid of spots. Retinol acts as a form of A vitamin. It is a type of retinoid, only less intense. Retinols contain a lower concentration of the active retinoic acid ingredient, making it a more skin-friendly form of Vitamin A. Retinol can be bought in various forms including creams, gels, serums, ointments, and lotions. The way it works is that it reduces wrinkles and tighten the skin by exfoliating, as well as increasing the production of collagen. This helps reduce fine lines and makes the skin appear smooth and look more youthful.

Trend #5: Minimalistic skincare routine

The minimalistic skincare routine involves simplifying your skincare routine. Ideally you want to only use around 3-5 products in your routine. It was not long ago that the trend was to use as many products as possible, luckily this has changed. You only need a few good products rather than layering your skin with products that does absolutely nothing for your skin. Keeping your skincare routine minimalistic makes it more affordable and feasible. The 5 most useful products you should consider including in your skincare routine are: cleanser, essence, tone, serum and moisturiser.

These are just some of the TikTok trends within skincare. The skincare world evolves everyday with new trends and products to try. It is important to note that what works for others may not work for you. You should aim to find the perfect skincare routine and products for your skin. Remember that the skincare process takes time. You will not start to see results right away. It may take weeks or months before you start to see an improvement in your skin. And do not lose hope! If a product doesn’t work for you, there are thousands of other options for you to try.
