Tanning Products 101: All You Need to Know for the Summer

Whether you are tanning inside in a tanning bed, or outside under the sun, it is important to take care of your skin. There are certain products you should use that will both enhance your tanning experience as well as protect and nourish your skin. It is very important to understand that you can enjoy your day in the sun, as the same time as taking care of your skin. Taking precautions against the sun does not entail staying in the shadows or covering yourself up. You can still get that sun kissed glow whilst looking after your skin.

Being protected against the sun means being protected against the ultraviolet radiation. The ultraviolet radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation that comes from the sun, and other sources such as tanning beds and a certain type of lamp. UV radiation has both positive and negative consequences. In small amounts, UV radiation helps with the production of vitamin D in the skin, which is important for bone health and the immune system. Over- and unprotected exposure to UV radiation on the other hand, can lead to skin damage, sunburn, premature aging, eye damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

This article includes a list of products we recommend you use during the summer, or when you’re just being out in the sun.

Sunscreen

Perhaps the most obvious product is sunscreen. It is recommended to wear sunscreen on your face every single day, and on your body when your skin is being exposed to the sun.

By wearing sunscreen on your face and body, you will be protected by the UV radiation. It blocks or alters the path of UV rays. It is important to remember that sunscreen must be applied properly, and reapplied every two hour or after swimming or sweating to maintain effective protection.

If you want a light coverup, but don’t want to put a lot of product on your face, or simply can’t be bothered and are looking for an easy way out. We recommend you consider a tinted SPF. A tinted SPF works the exact same way as a regular SPF expect it provides some colour and coverage to your face.

Exfoliators

Exfoliators works as a pre-tanning product. By exfoliating your skin before tanning, you will remove dead skin cells which will help you achieve a more even tan. In addition to this they help keep your skin smooth. Exfoliation can also help improve the effectiveness of the other skincare products by leaving a fresh and clean surface. It can also help prevent clogged pores, and promote a more even skin tone.

There are two types of exfoliators:

Physical exfoliators:

  • Scrubs
    • These exfoliators use small, gritty particles to scrub away dead skin cells.
  • Exfoliating gloves and brushes
    • These are tools that help remove dead skin cells by being rubbed against the skin

Chemical exfoliators:

These exfoliators use acids or enzymes to dissolve the dead skin cells without the need for scrubbing.

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
    • Water-soluble acids that work on the surface of the skin, such as Glycolic acid
  • Beta Hydroxy acids (BHAs)
    • Oil- soluble acids that penetrates deeper into the pores, such as Salicylic acid
  • Enzyme exfoliators
    • Uses natural enzymes from fruits to break down the dead skin cells, such as Papaya enzyme
